Firefox blocks 146,000 popups

April 29th, 2008

Imagine you are sitting on your computer and browsing the internet for a certain hotel in montreal, and you click on on a virtual tour of the hotel.

Now imagine if you were using Internet Explorer and over 146,000 popups blew up on your screen. Your computer would freeze so fast that the mammoth with that was frozen food in its mouth would say "damn that computer is frozen".

Luckily we have Firefox, see with firefox you do not have to download external pop-up blockers that will actually install malware or spyware on your sytem or charge you $19.95 to protect you from all these nasty pop-ups.

Still not sure if you should be making the switch from internet explorer to firefox? Than please take a look at this screenshot and think again.

Don’t think that is enough to persuade you? Check out this screenshot:

Not as many as the last 2 but still could freeze up your internet explorer pretty bad:

FireFox Add-On: Adblock Plus 0.7.5.4

April 28th, 2008

Are you tired of seeing ads on evey website that you go to? I know you are probably thinking that this guy is a hypocrit with all the ads showing on his website. But I will be honest with you. I don’t see them. I have a great add-on for FireFox called Adblock Plus 0.7.5.4.

The great thing about this program is that you can just read the content that you want without worring about any misleading links that could lead you away from the actual content that you want to be reading.

Adblock Plus 0.7.5.4 will also lead to faster load times for all the websites that you visit.

It will have to learn about some ad systems that are not yet cahced in it, but once you right click on a banner and click "adblock" banners from that server will no longer show. You can also use the asterik key to ensure that you do not see any ads from that particular server.

This program can be quite useful for when you visit a website that has those annoying smileys that laugh or cry once the ad loads. Or those ads that fly across the scene. The best part though is that you no longer have to wait for a website to load 100 different ads before you see actual content.

Here are some screenshots of the add-on in use:

A description from the plugins author:

Right-click on a banner and choose "Adblock" from the context menu - the banner won’t be downloaded again. Maybe even replace parts of the banner address with star symbols to block similar banners as well. Or you select a filter subscription when Adblock Plus starts up the first time, then even this simple task will usually be unnecessary: the filter subscription will block most advertisements fully automatically.

Ad block is the most popular add-on for firefox, and the most downloaded. It is meant for the whole community and not just for devolopers or programmers.

Firefox Add-On: FireFTP 0.97.1

April 28th, 2008

This will be a regular series of post where I will discuss some of the best add-ons that you can add to FireFox to increase your productivity.

One of the best add-ons for firefox for any web-devoloper/programmer/seo/designer has to to be FireFTP 0.97.1 before the release of this awesome software we were stuck with either our hosts slow uploading or we would have to either depend on Window’s FTP software or we would be at the mercy of products such as CuteFTP.

But when you are working with FireFox the best thing about FireFTP is that you do not have to worry about minimizing your browser. With tabbed browsing, when you open up FireFTP you can automatically use a great FTP client from within your browser.

All the defaults are set so that you do not have to worry about permissions and all that.

The only thing required of you is to enter the ftp host for example something like "ftp.yourhost.com" and than your user name and password, and you are set.

Here are some screenshots of the program:

Alone with being able to quickly move your files from your computer to your web host FireFTP also has advanced features such as: directory comparison, syncing directories while navigating, SSL encryption, search/filtering, integrity checks, remote editing, drag & drop, file hashing, and much more!

You can download the program here: Click here to download FireFTP 0.97.1

Update Your FireFox Browser

April 27th, 2008

One of the ways that we are informed that we need to update a certain software is that you will get one of those annoying popups that remind that an "urgent" update is required or your browser will crash.

This can be quite annoying for a regular person. But can you imagine if you were giving the 6 o’clock news and something like this were to happen to you? Or better yet imagine if you were with the weather person and giving an update on your ubber cool weathervision? And you got one of these screens?

I guess this will be the new blue screen of death:

The FireFox Mascot

April 27th, 2008

If a internet mascot would ever have a real life counterpart it has to be this little puppy from Florida.

I don’t know why someone would take the chance of giving their dog a haircut like this but someone is definitly not afraid of PETA.

I wonder how much the Mozilla foundation is paying this puppy to be the official mascot for FireFox.

100% Organic Firefox

April 27th, 2008

I found this great picture on flikr.  I imagine that it must have been taken at a time when the Mozilla foundation was trying to get people to promote firefox by using stickers.

a imaginative sticker

What type of imaginative firefox stickers have you seen?
